The coral and the aquatic side of the work i am producing, and the fact that i just watched blue planet, made me want to draw jellyfish. They have a fantastic way of being illustrated and the tentacles work perfect for the kind of things i love to draw. Here are some reference drawings i drew first from the Internet then developed into my own illustrative style. Jellyfish to me are quite mystical and would be ideal not as a character but as a animal than doesn't have the intelligent characteristics of say eyes or mouth..
Here is my attempt at a jellyfish using the tenticles i have used previously in other projects and the plant life drawn before. Overall it works really well as a strong image, love the composition of how the tenticles curl and spread downwards. The detail put underneth also adds to the 3D of the image, feel it would work well with inks and washes. To develop it further i felt it could be an island floating in the sky's with the creatures living ontop??...
Here is the outcome and again works well as a strong image however the face is not the best....maybe a bit too much detail on the top of the jellyfish and that plant behind the character doesn't really suit...however all together looking past those things, and speaking to peers and tutors it stands out as a strong image. What sent my mind thinking also was how the jellyfish in this drawing looks like its walking, and that maybe rather than having floating jellyfish have it marching with the world on top??
